New Hon Members

Honorary Members

We are extremely pleased to announce that two members of SRHSB were elected to Honorary Membership at the recent Vancouver Meeting. Honorary Membership is bestowed in recognition of exceptional achievement in the field of research into hydrocephalus and /or spina bifida, and / or services to the Society, or activities that make a significant improvement in practice or in outcome or quality of life for people with spina bifida or hydrocephalus. Persons elected will usually have made a significant contribution to the literature over some time, and have an international reputation in their field. We are limited by the Society's rules to 20 Honorary Members.

The two newly elected Hon Members are cited below.

Professor Ray J Fitzgerald MA, MB, FRCS, FRCSI, FRACS

Ray was formerly Consultant Paediatric Surgeon at Our Lady's Hospital For Sick Children, Dublin and Assoc Professor of Paediatric Surgery at Trinity College Dublin. He joined the Society in 1979 and has served as Hon Treasurer and later President. He has also served as President of the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons. Ray hosted a very successful Annual Scientific Meeting of SRHSB in Dublin. He has authored papers since 1972 on  the management of children with spina bifida, prevention of shunt infection and paediatric urology.

Dr Hazel C Jones BSc Hons PhD

Hazel has worked at King's College, London and the University of Florida, Gainsville, during which time she has specialised in physiology, biochemistry and genetics of hydrocephalus in animal models, notably the HTx rat. She has made major contributions to the literature over the years and is widely respected in her field. She was responsible for establishment of the HTx rat colony in UK. Hazel has served SRHSB as Hon Secretary and has established and organised the Animal Hydrocephalus Research pre-meeting at the Annual Scientific Meetings for several years.
